Thieves stole money and two rare sports medals from a
79-year-old man in Leigh.
The
pensioner was at his home on Kenyon Street on Monday 7 February 2011 between
8pm and 10pm.
The
offenders broke into the house through a window at the back and made their way
upstairs. They went into the bedroom and took the items from a chest of
drawers before leaving through the back door.
The
first medal is described as being a silver Shaw Cup winner’s medal that the
victim won in the 1950s.
The
second medal is described as being gold and presented to Rugby League referees
for services to the game. It dates back to the 1930s and was a family
heirloom.
Both
were in presentation boxes.
Inspector
Ian Kennedy from Leigh Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The victim is
devastated that these items have been taken, especially the two medals which
have sentimental value. I urge anyone who may be offered to buy them to
report it to police immediately. If you know where they are, please
contact us.
“I
would also remind residents to keep all doors and windows locked, even if you
are in your home at the time. As this case proves, if thieves spot an
opportunity to get inside and steal valuables they will take it even if you are
in.”
Anyone with any information are urged to contact police on 0161 872
5050 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
