Activities provided for young people, like kayaking and climbing, are helping to

cut anti-social behaviour across the borough.

There were 2,151 fewer

incidents in the last 12 months* compared to the previous 12-month period, a

reduction of eight per cent.

Superintendent John McNeil of Greater

Manchester Police’s Wigan Division said: “We are making real progress in

tackling problems such as underage drinking, improper use of off-road bikes and

young people gathering in large groups and creating a disturbance.

“A big

part of this has been our success in persuading young people to get involved in

youth projects across the borough. For example, Neighbourhood Policing Teams

(NPTs) in Pemberton and Leigh have been helping Wigan Council with the X Zones

project, police in Hindley ran Operation Buzzer throughout the summer and in

Atherton the Nowt 2 Do scheme goes from strength to strength. We also ran

Operation Windburn around Wigan’s Mesnes Park area throughout August-October

which cut anti-social behaviour by 80 per cent.

“Because of these

initiatives, young people have been able to try out a wide range of activities

such as kayaking, boating and music-mixing as well as other popular sports like

football and cricket. Climbing walls have been put up for the more adventurous

types, mobile skateboard parks have proved to be popular and barbecues have also

been organised for young people.”

Anti-social behaviour has also been

reduced through frequent alcohol seizures, issuing contact cards** and visiting

parents of troublemakers.

Superintendent McNeil continued: “Young people

sometimes complain about having nothing to do, but when they hang around in

groups it can make local residents anxious, even if they aren’t doing anything

wrong. We understand this, and will help them find alternative activities to

take part in, but if they continue to cause trouble we will take

action.”

Cabinet member for safer communities, Cllr Kevin Anderson, said:

“Youth related anti-social behaviour can have an immense and damaging impact on

communities, local businesses and visitors to the area.

“By improving

access to positive activities, we can divert young people away from engaging in

mischief, offering them fun opportunities in a safe environment. The raft of

activities available will keep them fit and teach them new skills, benefiting

themselves and the wider community.

“Offenders should also be reminded

that if, in spite of all efforts made to engage with them, their behaviour

continues to be unacceptable, strict enforcement action will be

taken."

Is a man shot in the face in Wigan not anti social??? It's not falling its getting worse...

Theres cocaine, heroin, canabis and alcohol epidemics in all young children, there is increased gang warfare between rival drug gangs (look at the lad who got stabbed the other month), vandalism like bus stops getting smashed in all over the place, graffiti everywhere

I'll tell you how to solve the problem, tell the police to GET OFF THERE ARSES and start tackling proper crime instead of catching motor criminals!!!!

ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR IS GETTING WORSE, AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT

    To freelab:

Whilst I agree with your points and, also, with this; "the thieving LIEBOUR COUNCIL", I need to point out that they are far from "MARXIST".

Marxism would imply several things, such as supporting the workers and, in this case, council control of services, etc.

Now, the present council are following government "diktat", which is actually more "Tory" than the tories, who are even more Tory than the hated and despised Maggie Thatcher, ever was. This bunch of clowns are putting out ALL council services, functions and staffing to private tender. Couldn't get much further from Marxist, if you tried. If you want to try a more accurate description, then try "totalitarian NeoCon".

"Liebour" have actually done deals with the Tories, on the council, which leaves us well and truly stitched up with more of the same, unless the independent candidates take a sizeable chunk of seats, at the next council elections.

I don't think there will be much change, anyway, because the majority of those who can be bothered voting still believe "Liebour" is the working man's party. They haven't been that, since John Smith died! It wouldn't matter anyway, because the phrase "would vote for a pig, if it wore a "Liebour" rosette" definitely applies, round here. The other option is a knee-jerk reaction to present parliamentary scandal and vote for the alleged "opposite" - the Tories! If ever there would be a case of shooting oneself in the foot, that would be it!

Sorry to go off-topic, but an implication that "Liebour" are anywhere within a million miles of left-wing is just plain wrong!
