6th May 2010 “A Bleak Day for Democracy in Wigan”
By Karenh2009 | Sunday, May 09, 2010, 11:57
On the 6th May 2010 the
electorate in Wigan gave Lord Peter Smith and the Labour Party an overwhelming
mandate to continue to destroy our communities by closing local High
Schools, take away our heritage by
demolishing buildings like Leigh Girls’ Grammar School, and build the Leigh
Mis-guided Busway jeopardising any chance of a heavy rail link
to Leigh in the foreseeable future.
What happened to thousands of people
in Atherton, Tyldesley and Leigh who signed the petitions to bring back local democracy, and pride in their Towns through
new Town Councils. Why have they just given Lord Peter Smith the ammunition he
wants to ignore their wishes and bulldoze anything he wants through Wigan
Council with only 22 opposition Councillors against his 51.
In 2011 local elections we need to
get back to real local issues and not revert to tribalism as has been the case
in the 2010 General and Local elections. In June there is to be a borough wide
consultation on community governance, this will be the last chance for you to
have your say. The main consultation will be conducted through Borough Life so
please read it for once and make your views known, so that they can’t ignore
them as they did when 82.7% of the respondents expressed a preference for a
directly elected Mayor.
As for the future of Leigh, the
Boundaries Commission for England have been asked to conduct a Principal
Boundaries Review. If you wish to support the case for a review please Email rbuck@electorialcommission.org.uk or write to The Boundaries
Commission for England, Trevelyan House, Great Peter Street, London, SW1 P2HW.
