Leigh Council, we want it back!!!!!

@leighpatriot : Did you not sign the petition for a Leigh Town council, a few weeks back? If you missed it, I can't think how, it was all over the Journal and Reporter. However, the problem with this initiative is we still remain part of Wigan. What we need to do is contact the Boundaries Commission and speak to them about a total break from Wigan. The present incentive allows us to take over some local decisions, but Bigwiggin can overturn the decision, or tie it up in court, if it doesn't suit the present autocracy. Before we do any of this, we need to break Labour's stranglehold, round here, ignore the Tories and Liberals and vote in any independent candidate who stands. We will only get a decent council, when we have councillors who are not party-affiliated and, therefore, subject to party diktat.

The Labour stranglehold would be easy to break, if people were prepared to listen and accept a couple of sad facts.

1. Labour are, in economic terms, so right-wing that even the hated Thatcher looks like a communist.

2. The moment Bliar (deliberate mis-spelling) took over, all pretence of supporting the working man and any Socialist aspirations were thrown out of the door, because the only way they would get in was to "out-Tory the Tories".

3. Labour are way more authoritarian than the hated Thatcher. We're one small step away from being a totalitarian regime, just like... err... oh yes, that's it; Mugabe, Saddam Hussein, Ahmedinajad, the Taliban, etc...

4. The Tories and Liberals are exactly the same, with a different - but equally unpleasant - slant.

Getting people to accept these facts is hard, when you are up against the PR machines of large political parties. It doesn't help that the local papers are (covertly) controlled by Labour.

Wigan won't be able to stop the formation of a local council, but it will simply use various regulations and so forth to tie up every decision it would makel, in a tribunal. It's how they work. Suffice it to say, they wouldn't stand up to investigations for corruption and unethical practice.

I gladly signed the petition to get Leigh away from "Big Brother Wigans"  control. Do you honestly think that the powers that be in Wigan are going to stop the gravy train that runs from Leigh, Atherton, Lowton etc?
I am not from Leigh, (still a foreigner after 20 years!) but I honestly believe that given the chance, the people of Leigh could do a far better job of running the town that the present biased mob in Wigan who, even though they adamantly refuse to admit it, are so obviously biased toward Wigan. They can deny it until the cows come home but it is plain to see, even to someone like me who is from t'other side of the Pennines.
We don't need political activists like Citizen Smith or the like, Leigh might be a bit run down but it is nowhere as bad as paople would have you believe. Come on Leythers, show a bit of gumption and have a bit more pride in your town, it could be a really nice place to live if you do summat about it !!

Seriously, chap, people will be more inclined to respond to you, if you do a few things:


Stop TYPING IN CAPITALS, it is regarded as shouting and makes the writer appear to be a bit dim. Try to construct a proper sentence, punctuated correctly and with proper spelling. If you insist on making accusations, rather than presenting opinions, then back the accusation with facts and be more moderate about it, or people will tend to ignore you. A little more time spent on your post will mean that more will be inclined to read it.


As it is, your post above leaves you open to libel charges and has the tone of "the loopy tramp, who sits on a corner, yelling at invisible people".


I'm sure you are a perfectly reasonable chap, really; so show it, eh?
